When Maria Alejandra Perrone became pregnant with her first child three years ago, she gained 40 pounds and found it difficult to go back to her previous body shape.

“I started the pregnancy with 136 pounds. I was already over my regular weight because I was always at 125 pounds,” Perrone said. “When I got pregnant, I went up to 176.”

She lost 46 pounds, but after her second child, Francesca, now 18-months old, was born, Perrone gained another 20 pounds.

“I bought a jogging stroller for two, and put them on it and started jogging,” Perrone said. “But I got sick, and you know how you can’t do cardio with the flu. I found 5-pound weights at my house and started using them.”

Perrone began searching on YouTube for videos that taught her how to workout and became obsessed with the idea. She told her husband she wanted to become a personal trainer.

Now at 31, Perrone is a National Council on Strength and Fitness certified personal trainer who just opened her business, Nana Health.

She offers personal training services, training guides and meal plans.

Every Saturday, Perrone also offers a boot camp class open to the public at 9 a.m. in Emerald Estates Park in Weston.

Morella Meneses, 27, mother of 9-month-old Isabel, has attended her boot camp class for the past two months.

“Her energy is spectacular,” Meneses said. “I bring my baby, and in a lot of places, you can’t. I bring her even if she cries or yells.  Everyone understands because almost everyone here is a mother.”

Perrone feels that her boot camps should be a place were families can come together to exercise.

“My main focus are moms, but also my thing is to try to gradually reach out to everyone,” she said.

Carlota Rubio, 8, was recently exercising along her mother through the 45-minute class.

“It’s fun because I love my mom, and I love exercising,” Rubio said.

With the help of her Instagram account, Perrone built a mom-driven fan base that pushed her to become a personal trainer and open the business.

“I opened the Instagram account around September of last year,” she said. “I did not put videos of myself at first.”

Her cousin, Rodolfo Gonzalez, a Venezuelan racecar driver, encouraged her to upload videos and photos of her training routine.

“I uploaded my first video and saw how moms started following me and how I was an inspiration to them,” Perrone said, who started seeing an increase in the number of women following her on social media.

“I said to myself if I am inspiring 100, 200, 1000, 3000 moms, I need to keep going, I need to progress, I can’t go backwards,” Perrone said. “It’s like you have a big responsibility and now with 48 thousand followers, they need to see that I keep on going.”

Perrone currently has more than 60 thousand followers on instagram.
